If you are familiar with the RWD IM, you’ll notice right away that the elbow on mine has been cut/modified. Different people have added a 350Z IM in different ways, which you can read about (“see”) here:

My project consisted of the following:

  • 3/4″ engine + transmission drop to maximize hood clearance
  • ES motor mounts + other bushings
  • Z-Tube
  • Modified upper plenum / MREV2 lower plenum with Motordyne spacer (more on this in a second)
  • Technosquare F-Spec reflash
  • 350Z valve covers (due to oil filling)
  • Battery relocation for airflow path
  • I purchased a set of 350Z LIM spacers from Aaron, and did not do any porting or polishing work. That may be something for the future.

I had a local machine shop grind down the tops of front/left (RWD/FWD) two-cylinder runners (4+5 mm) to create the MREV2, as well as cut and “re-angle” the elbow on the upper plenum. I had planned to use a 5/16″ isothermal spacer, but an issue surfaced when I was installing the upper plenum. Specifically, the TB had clearance issues, either the hood or the fuel rail, depending on its rotation. So, I went to the 1/2″ spacer and – voila – problem solved. (Note: this was only a problem in my case because of how I modified the neck – it could have been avoided.) And there is a bit different power delivery/more peak gains than the 5/16″ spacer (personal experience in my dad’s G35 with a 5/16″ spacer). This is not a simple bolt-on mod, nor one for the faint of heart. We had to troubleshoot issues as they surfaced (clearance, battery, etc.). But the result is worth it. I do feel like there is a little bit of a delay on WOT due to the larger plenum volume, but that also gives you more mid and top-end power. The F-Spec also helps (or anything that can extend the redline). Also, from in the cabin, there is are markedly deeper+louder induction growl that still makes me grin every time I get on it

I have been waiting to dyno until I install a Fidenza FW, which I will do when I need a new clutch. As I live in Germany, I don’t drive the Max more than 4-6 weeks a year, and I am not around all that much.

The plastic tube below is the “Sound Generator”. The Sound Generator is the noise you hear that makes your car sound as if it is shifting and it kinda gives a Growling noise when you jump on the CVT.

Nissan made the Sound Generator and piped it into the interior of our cars so that we can hear it and make it seem as though the CVT is going through the gears because without it (Sound Generator) the car/CVT was too quiet and we wouldn’t know what’s going on.

This is the cap I got. it was $2.90 at Lowes.

This is the rubber intake hose I removed to get at the plastic noisemaker tube. It connects the airbox and throttle body.

As you can see, there are three hose clamps that needed to be removed to take the intake hose out. I started by removing the cover from the air filter box. I needed to remove the hose clamp and then also disconnect the mass airflow sensor and the cable ties that held it in place. Here’s what it looked like after I removed the airbox lid exposing my air filter (red filter at bottom of the picture).

After I loosened all three hose clamps. I just pulled up and out on the rubber tube and the plastic “noisemaker” slid out (it was held to the rubber tube with another hose clamp, but I didn’t need to loosen this one until after I got it out). Here’s the rubber intake hose with the plastic noisemaker still attached (It’s resting on the battery in the picture).

I then removed the plastic noisemaker and secured the cap over the hole. I could actually tighten it fairly tight, I kept checking the inside of the hole to make sure it wasn’t collapsing, and it withheld quite a bit of pressure.

After that, I just hooked the rubber intake hose back into place and tightened all the hose clamps back down.

BAM. Quiet cabin.

This is just for reference purposes on a member that has used these coilpacks. Most people just go OEM but this is a good reference for those who choose this route. We recommend sticking with OEM.

This fixed the infamous gear slamming issue after upgrading to the upgrade Level 10 valve body.
