I decided to upgrade my carpc that I had done last year. If anyone is interested in looking at the old setup, here is the link https://www.my4dsc.com/1997-4thgen-nissan-maxima-with-custom-carpc-installed-part-1/.

Some Problems with the old Setup:

  • Too much Power Consumption
  • Bugs with home made startup/shutdown controller
  • Static Noise heard
  • Long USB cables causing signal problems
  • Long bootup time

So I got rid of the old setup and had the following new components:

  • Intel D410PT MINI ITX Motherboard w/ Fanless 1.6 GHZ Intel Atom Processor
  • Corsair 32GB SSD Drive
  • TUFF N TINY 4GB Flash Drive
  • Nlite Windows Xp Professional SP2
  • Custom Plexiglas enclosure designed to fit completely behind the dashboard
  • M4-ATX Startup/Shutdown Controller
  • OEM Nissan Heated Switch integrated for on/off purposes
  • Custom Integrated USB Port in the Ashtray
  • I still kept the same devices (like the Garmin GPS, OBDII controller) but I decided to store all my music in a flash drive. Since the software I was using was Centrafuse 3.1, it still did not support ipod capibility with iphones and itouches, I decided that there is no point in storing the music on an ipod.

The old setup

So, now the new stuff, the goal of this project was to:

  • Keep the existing OEM look
  • Fix all problems from previous setup
  • Integrate everything behind the dash
  • Keep the new project on a budget.

Next, I wired my OEM Nissan Heated seat warmer switch. I wired it up for use and then used a 2000 grit wet and dry sandpaper to remove the marking off the switch.

Next, I made my wiring diagram which is shown below.

Installation

Here are some install pictures. Below you will see my plexiglass enclosure. The design came out perfect, I had only a few mm in tolerance around the edges. I also fitted a small fan to blow any heat generated.

Now doing a test run.

Here is the finished setup with everything working, as you can see the new switch at its location.

Question: Can I remove the tape player and put in a aftermarket radio while keeping the Factory GPS?

Answer: Yes. All you lose is the navigation audio. I never use that anyhow. If you find new buttons let me know where. It’s been near impossible to find the buttons or a new nav unit

Install Notes:

  • You just need to swap your existing 4GM bracket to the 04+ horns. You can easily get these horns from a junkyard or part-out as this is not a highly sort after park.
  • Once you swap them, you may need to bend the brackets a little just to stay clear of the AC Condenser.
  • The ground plug is same for both so no need to do anything else.
  • The horn sound is much better and louder.

For those who have a 2016 earning for apple and android CarPlay. It’s possible!. Installed a 2018 head unit into my 2016 maxima. eBay find $300. Plug and play being OEM. Just be mindful the the headunits differ depending on if your vehicle is equipped with Bose vs non-Bose.

Notes:

  • So quick question, so your radio didn’t need to be programmed by the dealer correct? Not at all! Once it’s installed it’s good to go. Just make sure the SD card comes with the used replacement from 2017 or 2018.
  • 25915 9(DE1C) was the new part number. DE is 2018 which comes with android auto. DD is a 2017 unit only has apple. The 1 stands for Bose and non Bose is a 0. Ignore the last letter. They can vary.

Order Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H852D49
Price: $33.99

 Notes:

  • Pretty much plug and play.
  • You can use the existing center bolt hole by the license plate. The camera will route right through there.
  • The video quality is great.
  • You can run it to the reverse light if you want the camera alone and if you wanna use your camera while you drive then run an extra wire to the radio so you can activate it whenever you want.
