I recently cleaned my throttle body and went threw the PAIN of trying to relearn my idle through the step by step process. But its misleading, the 7th step says to start car after light goes off but never does. You actually start car as soon as light stops blinking! Hope this helps somebody.

ENGINE COLD

  1. Perform “Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning” .
  2. Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
  3. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
  4. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
  5. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
  6. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
  7. WAIT over 10 seconds before this next step.
  8. Perform “Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning” .
  9. Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
  10. Turn ignition switch “ON”. WAIT EXACTLY ONE SECOND SHARP. Turn ignition switch “OFF”
  11. THEN wait at least 10 seconds.
  12. Make sure that throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound. – Very hard to hear anything at all. Just believe this is happening by faith.

Now, here’s the big change

  1. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.

AND RIDE YOUR CAR FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES, this will make for correct operating temperatures to happen within the engine for the following steps. Warming your car in the garage in the morning apparently does not cut it.

Check that all items listed under the topic “PREPARATION” (previously mentioned) are in good order.

  1. Turn ignition switch “OFF” and wait at least 10 seconds.
  2. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
  3. Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds.
  4. Fully depress the accelerator pedal. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
  5. Wait 7 seconds
  6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the MIL stops blinking and turns ON.
  7. Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the MIL goes off. Start engine and let it idle. THE ENGINE MUST BE STARTED WITHIN THE 3 SECONDS AFTER IT STOPS BLINKING, THATS HOW THIS LIGHT GOES OFF. THE SERVICE MANUAL DOES NOT STATE THIS, BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THE DIAGRAM WHERE THE ENGINE LINE ON-OFF IS, IT CLEARLY SHOWS YOU SHOULD TURN IT ON WITHIN THESE THREE SECONDS.

This is where your engine will start to learn the correct idle settings

  1. Wait 20 seconds.
  2. Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure that idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifications.

On the 4th Generation Maxima engine the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor is located in the water outlet tube close to the engine end of the upper radiator hose. There are two sensors in that area. The one nearest the hose is for the dashboard temperature gauge. The ECTS, the one you’re interested in, is right next to the the gauge sending unit. There is a good picture of these sensors in the Haynes manual on page 3-7.

With the engine cold, disconnect the ECTS and measure its resistance. Reconnect the ECTS, start the engine, run it until fully warmed up. Stop the engine, and repeat the resistance measurement. The “warm” reading should be a much lower value than the “cold” reading.

The specs for the ECTS are:

  • Engine coolant temperature 68F, ECTS resistance 2.1 – 2.9 Kohms
  • Engine coolant temperature 194F, ECTS resistance 0.24 – 0.26 Kohms

Replacements Symptoms/Notes:

  • Below about 30 degrees idle will die if I don’t keep my foot on the gas at startup. Once engine is warm it’s OK.
  • Just a quick update for anyone having the same problem. Replaced the CTS (ECU Temp sensor in the picture) and guess what? My multi-year cold start problem is OVER! She runs like new again. Over $1000 spent on MAF, TB cleaning, and more and all I needed to do was replace a $9.00 sensor.

On February 22, 2022, all Nissan vehicles equipped with telematics hardware compatible for use with the 3G cellular network will be unable to access NissanConnect Services and NissanConnect EV features.

The NissanConnect Services and NissanConnect EV & Services telematics programs will be affected by AT&T’s decision to discontinue its 3G cellular network. On February 22, 2022, all Nissan vehicles equipped with telematics hardware compatible for use with the 3G cellular network will be unable to access NissanConnect Services and NissanConnect EV features. New enrollments for these vehicles will also no longer be allowed after June 1, 2021. After this point, customers who are not already enrolled in a telematics trial or subscription will be unable to access services for their vehicle. The decision to discontinue 3G network coverage was not made by Nissan and this change is not within Nissan’s control.

On the latest update of the Maxima (2019 and newer at least), you can. You just hold the button to turn cruise on for 1.5 sec or more, and it switches to normal cruise.

I always do this as I hate the default intelligent cruise control. I wonder if the 2019 Murano update also added the ability to switch between the cruise types. I had a 2015 Murano, and I couldn’t do this as it would only allow for intelligent cruise control, and where my dislike for that tech began.
